Barnabas Sentiwe and his partner Phumla Veli only had eyes for each other when they briefly appeared at the Blue Downs Magistrates’ Court. The pair are accused of beating and beheading Constable Monwabisi Mnyombolo in their Mfuleni home in October 2009.

It has been claimed Sentiwe flew into a jealous rage because he thought his cop neighbour was having an affair with his lover. Constable Mnyombolo was reported missing on October 26. His remains were discovered almost two years later on May 12, 2011, by a new owner of the house. Sentiwe reportedly kept the 29-year-old’s body in his house for two days before burying the head and body in the backyard. This comes after the couple’s murder trial was transferred to the Western Cape High Court by Magistrate Deon van der Spuy. Warrant Officer Gershwin Matthee and student Constable Cannon Cloete killer on trail. 17 October 2012 Cape Town - One of the three men accused of murdering two Kraaifontein police officers claims he was assaulted by police while in custody, but the first record of a medical complaint was lodged only six months after the alleged attack. This came to light during the trial of Sivuyile Sangovana, Khangelani Thukela Twala and Olwethu Sothondoshe who are accused of murdering Warrant Officer Gershwin Matthee, 39, and student Constable Cannon Cloete, 23, on May 23 last year. A fourth man, Sibusiso Mehlo, is on trial alongside the trio in the Western Cape High Court. He and Twala have been charged with two counts of attempted murder for shooting two Somali shop keepers four days after the police officers were killed.

On Tuesday, senior correctional services officer Michael Pits testified during the trial-within-a-trail about the admissibility of a statement that Sothondoshe had made to police a month after his arrest. Pits told the court of the procedures involved when admitting inmates to Pollsmoor Prison for the first time and when they are transported to and from court. Pits said an inmate’s arrest warrant was checked, fingerprints were confirmed and they were searched.

If there were visible injuries on the inmate, it would be noted on the warrant with a red pen. Pits defined a visible injury as an open wound caused by an assault or car accident. He said since Sothondoshe was admitted at the prison on June 20 last year there had been no record that he had been assaulted. Pits did however say that a card containing medical complaints had been filed in Sothondoshe’s name showing that he visited the hospital three times during his incarceration. The dates recorded on the medical card were on December 14 last year, January 10 and September 17 this year, Pits confirmed.

The contents of Sothondoshe’s medical problems were not revealed because they were confidential.
