SANFL SPEEDS UP FOR FAST FOOTY SANFL supporters will need to brace themselves for the inaugural Australian Unity Fast Footy competition, to be held across two days in February next year. Dubbed SANFL’s version of Twenty20 Cricket, Australian Unity Fast Footy will see as many as 12 games of football played on February 9 and 10 at the Norwood Oval. Each team will only have 12 players on the field at once, with four players in attack, four in the midfield and four in defence. Matches will include four 10-minute quarters, with the first team to score 50 points, or the team in front at the final siren, declared the winner. If a team wins by reaching 50 points first, it will also earn a valuable bonus point in determining its final ladder position.

But the most noticeable feature will be the speed of the games, which is certain to favour pacy players. Interchanges will be unlimited, ensuring players remain fresh in the expected warm conditions while the rules will be conducive to keeping the ball in play. The Last Possession Out of Bounds rule enforced during the minor round will be ramped up to be the Last Touch Out of Bounds rule, encouraging teams to play through the corridor at The Parade. The ball must be kicked in after any score, not just a behind, while it will also remain in play if it hits the goal or point post and rebounds back onto the field. Nine-point super goals will be awarded for any goals kicked from outside the 50m arc, causing players such as new North Adelaide recruit Jarred Allmond and South’s Tom Fields to present plenty of danger to their opposition.

Players will also be wary not to infringe on their opponents with severe penalties to be applied for free kicks. Inside the defensive 50m arc – the opposition player will have a shot from 20m out directly in front. Inside the forward 50m arc – the opposition player will have a free kick at the centre of their defensive 50m arc. In the event of a tied game, an exciting finish looms with each team nominating their best set-shot kickers to have a soccer-style penalty shoot-out from 30m out directly in front of goal. The first kicker to miss will ensure the opposing team wins the game. Despite the on-field action also acting as an important pre-season fixture for the Macca’s League season, the incentive to win should be high considering as much as $20,000 will be on offer as prizemoney, with $10,000 to the first-placed team, $5,000 to the runner-up and $2,500 each for third and fourth place. Fans will not only be able to see their recruits sporting their new colours for the first time but also enjoy the carnival atmosphere at the Woods Street venue with Club Zones to be allocated for each participating teams to be coupled with food trucks, children’s entertainment and vibrant music to get the adrenalin pumping.

Australian Unity Fast Footy February 9-10 Norwood Oval – Free Entry * 12 matches to be played across two days – four on Friday February 9 and eight on Saturday February 10 * Each match consists of four 10-minute quarters * First team to score 50 points or team in front at final siren wins * Penalty shoot-out finale from 30m in front of goal to decide winning team if scores tied at final siren * 12 players per team on the field – four midfielders, four forwards and four defenders * Unlimited interchanges. Interchanges occur at points in each sector of the ground (midfield, forward, back) * 9 points awarded for any goal kicked from outside 50m arc * Ball to be kicked in after any score, goal or behind * Ball to remain in play if rebounds off a goal or point post * Last TOUCH out of bounds rule enforced, as opposed to Last Possession used in minor round. Reg Causby 100 on 24 December The North Adelaide Football Club is delighted to announce that its oldest living past player,, will be 100 years old on 24 December 2017. Congratulations Reg! Reginald Allan Causby was born in Broken Hill and spent his early childhood there before his parents moved the family to Gawler during the Great Depression in the 1930s.

He and his brothers played football for the Rovers Club in Gawler and were prominent in that team. Reg and brother Jack moved to Walkerville in 1938 and played with the Walkerville Football Club.

In 1939 he was a junior at North Adelaide, making his League debut on 2 September in the last match of the season. He was highly regarded by the NAFC, as indicated by the Annual Report for that season which confidently predicted that he would be well in the running for A grade honours the following season. Despite playing practice matches with the League squad in 1940 and being constantly pursued by North Adelaide officials, Reg decided to see out his football career with his brothers at Walkerville. Thus his debut in 1939 became his only League match. For the statistically minded, Reg is just the second known past player for North Adelaide to reach the grand age of 100 – the first was Andy Gunn (1919,1922) who lived to 103!

There are currently another 15 living past players who are in their 90s and one, Edwin Templer, will also become a centurion next year. But this week is all about Reg Causby. We wish you all the best Reg and hope you have a wonderful celebration of such a significant milestone. 2017 Hall of Fame DVD The 2017 North Adelaide Football Club Hall of Fame Induction Night has been recorded on DVD. ROOSTERS ROAD TRIP TO BROKEN HILL At the request of West Broken Hill, the home Club of NAFC Captain, Mitch Clisby we ran a coaching clinic for their Club on Thursday November 16. Senior Coach Josh Carr, Head of Development Jacob Surjan, Under 18 Coach Craig Brooks, Senior Football Manager Darryl Wintle and myself travelled up there to offer assistance to the Club.

Training sessions were run with players across all groups at the Club. There were Under 13,15 and 18 boys, Senior men and Senior women involved. Broken Hill run a strong women’s competition and it was also an opportunity to catch up with the most talented players, some who will come down and try out with our women’s team. After training we were taken back to their Clubrooms where we shared a BBQ tea with the players, and spoke briefly to them about playing pathways within the SANFL, men and women. The Coaches then gathered for a meeting which lasted almost an hour where Josh, Jacob and Darryl were able to answer questions and offer their thoughts. It also gave Craig Brooks and myself a chance to speak to parents of players, who have shown an interest in playing in our Under 16 and Under 18 competitions.

Several players have played in recent years, with Isaac Cumming, who was drafted by GWS the most notable. We have a link to Broken Hill through our Northern Cities Country Championship team and plan to extend that next year when they will participate in our Under 15 Country Carnival.

The trip should have benefits for both Clubs, and we thank them for their generous hospitality whilst we were there. Neil Sanders. Vale Lyle Griffin The North Adelaide Football Club is greatly saddened by the passing of Lyle Griffin on 14 November, just 3 days after being inducted into the Club’s Hall of fame.

Was born on 17 May 1928 in North Adelaide to Gilbert Benjamin (Bert) Griffin and Consie Hill. He grew up in Olive Street, Prospect and attended Prospect School where he first played football. In 1938 he was a member of the team from that school that won the Mark Mitchell Shield for the premier primary school in the State. He played for the North Adelaide Colts team in 1945 and was runner-up (to Jim Deane) for the Fairest and Most Brilliant player in the Colts League. Lyle played in the North Adelaide “B” team for most of 1946 and performed so well that he was runner-up for the best all-round player in the Association and made his league debut on 6 July.

The following year he played mainly “A” grade, winning the Most Improved Junior award but also being selected in the Association side in B grade. 1948 was a break-out year as Lyle played every game in the League, one of only 5 players to do so. He won the Most Effective Player award and was described in the Annual Report as “one of our real finds for the season, developed into a brilliant centre man. Seldom defeated, he fully justified our selectors' good opinion of him”. Still very young in 1949, he played well early but his form dropped away towards the end of the season and he did not play in any of the finals that year. 1950 was the reverse – not in top form early, but played extremely well in the latter half of the season with his fine play-on game and brilliant anticipation.

An amusing anecdote noted in the Club notes of that season was that after one game at Glenelg he was seen chugging off on his motor bike to Port Noarlunga. Apparently he was quite a fisherman!

Another excellent season followed in 1951, resulting in the Most Consistent Player award and selection in the State team for all 4 matches that they played. He covered himself with glory against Victoria in his first State game and was one of the three most brilliant players afield on each occasion. Again he managed to play every match in the season for North Adelaide, including 3 finals.

As good as he was in 1951, Lyle’s 1952 season was better again! He was North’s Fairest and Most Brilliant player, runner-up to Len Fitzgerald for the Magarey Medal and won the O’Halloran Trophy as South Australia’s best player against Victoria in July.

One story is now legendary in state football. Lyle was badly injured and was being taken from the ground on a stretcher. But still well enough to see the ball coming his way Lyle climbed off the stretcher to win another possession for South Australia. Best of all, he was an integral member of our 1952 premiership team which defeated Norwood by 18 goals. His season was summarised in our Annual Report thus: Beginning on the wing, but taking over at centre in mid-season, Lyle was a brilliant runner-up to Len Fitzgerald for this year's Magarey Medal. His football was almost a miracle of consistent winning; he dominated centre repeatedly, and particularly on the big occasions. His great interstate reputation as a wingman was further enhanced by good displays again this season.

Another good season followed in 1953, culminating in Lyle winning the award for Most Consistent Player and again representing the State. For the 3 rd year in a row, he played in every game during the season. In 1954 he suffered a serious injury which kept him out of action for many weeks but he still managed to play 12 very good games. In 1955 he was appointed Vice-captain and was recognised as a brilliant centreman who held the position as a safe avenue of attack against all comers. With the retirement of Ian McKay at the end of that year, Lyle was elected Captain in 1956. His vast experience, courage, and typical North Adelaide spirit was of great benefit to the Club.

For the 5 th time in his career, he played in every match of the season. He was appointed Captain again in 1957 and was in top form when he suffered an injury which kept him out of action for the balance of the year.

At the end of the year he decided to retire as a player. He was awarded life membership of both North Adelaide and the SANFL. He had played for 12 seasons and amassed 179 games for North Adelaide and a further 11 for his State. He was inducted into the North Adelaide Football Club Hall of Fame on 11 November 2017 but was unable to attend due to ill health. The Club acknowledges Lyle’s outstanding career and salutes one of its premiership heroes.

Our sincere condolences are extended to his family and many friends. CLICK TO VIEW PHOTOGALLERY FROM THE NIGHT. Congratulations to the latest four Hall of Fame Inductees JOHN EARL was born in England but came to Australia when he was 2 years old. Almost nothing is known of John’s early life but when he debuted for North Adelaide in round one of the 1897 season few people could have envisaged a career that would last some 13 seasons in the red and white, snare at least two best and fairest awards, and play in two premierships as well as fitting in a stint at The Boer War. North finished the 1897 season with 7 wins from 17 games which was their best finish in their short history and Earl was mentioned as being a “fine follower”.

Six wins from 14 outings followed in 1898 with Earl being singled out by “The Register” as “The North’s great man”. 1899 was yet another great year for Earl and again “The Register” was full of praise proclaiming “North Adelaide claimed to have the best follower in the colony in J. Earl” He missed the whole 1900 season (and North Adelaide’s first premiership) fighting in the Boer War in South Africa with the 1st South Australian Mounted Rifles. He served in South Africa from November 1899 to November 1900. After returning to Australia he fronted for the 1901 season with North and played in every game until Round 15 when he broke a bone in his foot, forcing him to miss the rest of the season and no doubt denting North’s chances of going back to back in the process.

In 1902 he played an integral role in North’s premiership, playing in every match, and capping the year off by once again winning the club’s best and fairest award (sharing the award with Norm Claxton). Over the following seasons Earl missed only a handful games, and again played a vital role in North’s next premiership success in 1905, being named as one of the best players on the ground.

Later in his career he was Vice-Captain of the club (under Charlie Jessop) and after playing in every match in 1908 he again won the club’s main award. He also was awarded Life Membership of the club. After playing in all but one match in 1909, Earl retired from football, and umpired in 1910. He came out of retirement late in the 1911 season and played another two games for North Adelaide including the final against Port. This was to be the last hoorah for Earl, and there ended the career of one of North’s first true champions. His career tally was 158 games for North Adelaide and 5 for South Australia – an amazing total for that era. John was also a champion distance runner, boxer and swimmer – quite an athlete.

He was one of the founding members of the SA Amateur Swimming Association. JEFF PASH was always destined to play football for North Adelaide. His father Ben had played football with North Adelaide’s Association (seconds) side, and four of Ben’s brothers (Jeff’s uncles) played league football in the red and white - Sidney and Fred for Medindie, and Harold and Norman for North Adelaide. Jeff attended Prospect Public School and then Adelaide High School where he played football.

In 1935 he was playing football for Prospect Methodist in the United Church Football Association. He played the last six games of the season with North Adelaide’s Association side. 1936 saw Jeff at Teachers College and he played with the College’s team in the Amateurs A2 Grade in 1936 and 1937.

He captained the side in 1937 and represented the State Amateur side in their first win against Victoria in Victoria on August 1 st and was named high in the best players. Jeff debuted for North’s league side in the opening round of 1938 against Port Adelaide at Alberton Oval, and had an outstanding first season.

Playing in every game, he won the trophy for the club’s Best and Fairest as well as the trophy for the Best Junior. He followed up with another brilliant season in 1939 taking out not only the club’s Best and Fairest but the highest award in the State, the Magarey Medal. After another year with North Adelaide in 1940, Jeff was transferred to Port Augusta with work in 1941 and continued playing football with South Augusta in the Spencer Gulf League. He won the Association Medal for the best player in the league in 1943.

He came down to the city for the finals series and played all three finals with the Norwood-North wartime combination including the winning Grand final. He was back in the city for 1944 and played all but one game for the season for Norwood-North, again including the winning Grand Final. In 1945 he was named Captain of North Adelaide playing 12 games in this role before standing down and handing the captaincy to his deputy, Ray Hoskins, as Jeff felt his form was suffering. After two more solid seasons Jeff found himself in the Association side for most of the 1948 season. In 1949 North’s new coach, Ken Farmer, gave him a new lease of life, and he played all 19 games and regained something like his Magarey Medal form of ten years earlier. Jeff announced to his teammates in the rooms prior to the 1949 Grand Final that he was retiring from the game and that the Grand Final would be his last game. He went on to be high in North’s best players (some say Best on Ground) in North’s winning side.

In the same year he was made a life member of the club. On retiring from football he took up writing articles on football for the now defunct daily paper “The News”. He wrote for “The News” from 1950 to 1964, and his articles were highly regarded as giving great insight into the game and the men who played it. LYLE GRIFFIN first played for the North Adelaide Colts team in 1945 and was runner-up (to Jim Deane) for the Fairest and Most Brilliant player in the Colts League.

He played in the North Adelaide “B” team for most of 1946 and performed so well that he was runner-up for the best all-round player in the Association and made his league debut on 6 July. DAVID TILLER was recruited from the Risdon Football Club in the Spencer Gulf League as a junior (U19) for the 1977 season. He impressed so much at that level that he won the Best First Year Player award and was soon promoted to the Reserves where he played 10 games and won the trophy for Most Effective Player.

He made his debut in the League team on 30 July and played 4 of the last 5 games. At just 19 years of age, he was already predicted to have a big future in league football. A powerful footballer with a strong left foot kick, he impressed North officials and supporters alike. He played almost every game in the League in 1978 and won the award for Consistent Service. After spending much of the following year in the Reserves, he bounced back in 1980 to win the award for Most Consistent in the League. In a portent of things to come, David was assisting to coach juniors even at this early stage of his career. 1981 was a breakout season for Tiller, playing every game and winning the Club’s coveted Fairest and Most Brilliant player award as well as a host of other awards.

Two more solid seasons followed, with David being appointed Vice-Captain in 1982-83 and the team making the finals for the first time in many years in 1983. He was appointed Captain in 1984 and won the Fairest and Most Brilliant player award for the second time. He captained the team to the Grand Final in both 1985 and 1986 and was awarded Life Membership of the NAFC in 1986 after playing over 200 League games. In 1987 David was again Vice-Captain and was an integral part of a very successful season which culminated in a premiership. He was Vice-Captain again in 1988, a year notable by David passing the Club games record previously held by Don Lindner (his record was broken in 1989 by Michael Redden!) Injury allowed Tiller to play only 1 League game in 1990 and he retired at the end of that season after a long and very successful football career.

He returned to the Club as U17 coach for 7 years from 2000 to 2006 which included a premiership in 2005. After a break for a couple of years, Tiller coached the U16s for 8 years from 2009 to 2016. This latter stint included premierships in 2010, 2011 and 2013 and he was fittingly named Club person of the year in 2011. Click to view photos from the night.

Tropiano is 25 years old and joins the Roosters after playing 100 games in the WAFL competition where he averaged 23 possessions & 5 tackles per game. Tropiano had his best year in the WAFL in 2015, where he won the Sandover Medal and also the Best and Fairest award with Perth. Aidan is an inside midfielder who has a high work rate and excels around the contest with his ball winning ability and defensive pressure. Aidan will join the Roosters for our pre-season campaign early next week and we look forward to getting him involved with our program. We welcome Aidan to the North Adelaide Football Club. TWO NEW COACHING APPOINTMENTS FOR SEASON 2018 As part of our football review outcomes, the NAFC would like to announce two new coaching appointments for season 2018. In the new full time position of Head of Development, we would like to welcome Jacob Surjan to our football club.

Dear Valued Members and Supporters, The external, independent in-season Review of the Football Department at the NAFC, which was announced in August 2017 to the NAFC Members and the wider football community in SA, has now been completed. Brian Cunningham and Tim Ridgway, Directors of International Sports Care were appointed to undertake this Review.

The Review has taken the views of a broad range of stakeholders, either by on-line survey, face to face meetings or in several cases by written submissions. The Reviewers have applied their significant experience in the sporting industry and have made a series of recommendations which have been considered by the NAFC Board and have the potential to have a significant positive impact on NAFC’s on-field performance within the next three Years. This Report and it’s recommendations, however, are at a point in time. With the vagaries of sport and the many and varied factors which dictate win/loss ratios in sporting competitions, there is, of course, no certainty nor any timeframe guaranteed to get the success that the NAFC Board, Management, coaching and support staff and the Club’s members crave. Notwithstanding, the Board strongly believes that there is a roadmap for the NAFC Football Department to success into the near future. The Board has considered all aspects of the Review and I am very pleased to announce that it has agreed to adopt the majority of the recommendations.

In this regard we will be holding a Members’ Forum on Tuesday 14th November 2017 from 6:30pm until 8:00pm in the NAFC Function Room to provide more information to you about the Review and its outcomes. This will then best prepare us all to take on the challenge of lifting our Club into prominence once more as a genuine on-field force in SANFL Football. Lee Virgin President – NAFC Board of Directors. After a successful first few months of donations and interest for our brand new picket fence, the project is steaming ahead.

We now have available, an up to do date list (in chronological order) with the pickets that are still available for donation (as of 5pm, 24. Need For Speed Rivals Origin License Serial Keys. 10.17). The donation is set at $200 per picket for non NAFC members or $180 for NAFC members, a very small donation for a piece of significant history!

MAX THRING RE-SIGNS FOR 2018 The North Adelaide Football Club is pleased to announce that Max Thring has signed for another year with the Roosters!

The 25-year-old has played 91 League games for the Club since making his debut in Round 5, 2011 and believes the future is bright. “ I love playing footy with such a tight group of boys. The majority of the league squad have now played over 20-30 games and have progressed well. Yes we are a young side, but we have all played enough games together now to meet our expectations. I am very much looking forward to the future.” Max is an important member of the player leadership group and has been one of our most consistent performers for a number of years. We look forward to watching Max contributing on field in 2018 and announcing many more re-signings over the coming weeks!

Jordie McKenzie to return home North Adelaide midfielder Jordie McKenzie has advised the club of his decision to return home to Victoria. Jordie spoke to Senior Coach Josh Carr recently about his decision to return home after joining the Roosters at the start of the 2016 season. The hard working midfielder played 31 games over his two seasons at Prospect Oval and is an outstanding person both on and off the field.

In 2016, Jordie represented South Australia against Victoria, won the club champion Barrie Robran Medal and also received the coaches’ award for his efforts in educating and developing the junior players at the football club. Jordie battled a few minor injuries and heavy knocks early in the 2017 season which affected his ability to prepare and perform at the level he would like. Jordie weighed up his options and decided to finish his time at the state league level to return home and be closer to family. Jordie will return to Victoria later in the year and we thank him for being a true professional and great role model for the playing group in his time at the club. We wish Jordie all the best for his future pathways both on and off the field.

History of the Barrie Robran Club Champion Medal Behind the Magarey Medal, a club’s Best and Fairest award is a footballer’s highest personal accolade. To ascertain when North Adelaide’s historic Best and Fairest award commenced we need to venture back over nearly 130 years to find our first recipient. Although the first number of seasons results were ambiguous in determining a winner or if the award was presented it is believed in North’s first season in 1888 when the club was known as Medindie captain Albert Rowley was recognised as winning our first Best and Fairest award. It wasn’t until the early 1900s that records provided more clarity on the winner for each season.

Since then the list of Club Champions provides a who’s who on North’s greatest players over the decades but clearly the stand-out is the incredible consistency and brilliance of Barrie Robran’s seven successive wins (1967-73) as the greatest achievement in this award’s history. Ball-magnet onballer James Allan’s five consecutive wins (2007-11) places him a clear second in a position that may never be repeated.

North have four other players who have won the award three times: Ruckman John Earl (1899, 1902, 1908), Hall of Fame ruckman Tom Leahy (1911, 1914, 1919), state representative Darrel Conrad (1924, 1926, 1929) and the mercurial Don Lindner (1958, 1962, 1967). In 2009 the Best and Fairest was renamed the Barrie Robran Club Champion Medal – an appropriate and unquestionable decision to honour the greatest player in our club’s history.

Albert (1889-90) and Herbert (1892) Brown, Barrie (1967-73) and Rodney (1976) Robran and Andrew (1985, 1989) and Darren (1990) Jarman are the only brothers to be honoured North’s highly-respected award. Whilst the obvious focus is on the victor, spare a thought for the great rover Terry von Bertouch who finished runner-up on four occasions (1968-69, 1971-72) during Robran’s dominance – and never won the award himself.

Established in 2002 to enshrine those who have made a “most significant contribution to the game of Australian Football,” the SA Football Hall of Fame now includes 208 players, coaches, umpires, administrators and media representatives. John Condon OAM John is a long-serving football administrator having joined the Adelaide Football Club soon after its inception. Currently serving as the club’s historian and as Secretary for the Adelaide branch of the Carbine Club, he is a respected and well-known figure in the state’s sporting community.

In 2009, John received an OAM during the Queen’s birthday awards for service to the community through Australian Rules football and the Carbine Club of South Australia. He is a Life Member of the Adelaide Football Club, and has sat on the Adelaide Football Club and North Adelaide Football Club Hall of Fame selection committees.

Administration: General manager, North Adelaide Football Club (1979-1991); League Director, North Adelaide Football Club (1979-1991) football manager, Adelaide Football Club (1992-98); SANFL salary cap investigator (1998-2016), SANFL History Committee, 2014-Current. Honours: Order of Australia Medal, 2009; SANFL life membership, 1990, Adelaide FC Life Membership 2016; Australian Sports Medal, 2000; North Adelaide Football Club Life Membership 1975. Damian Squire Part of an illustrious group of players to have won multiple Magarey Medals, Damian Squire was a State League star of the 90s and early 2000s, playing over 100 games for both North Adelaide and Sturt.

A natural footballer, Damian was a dynamic, quick thinking half forward and was selected as part of Port Adelaide’s inaugural AFL squad. In 1999, with a year of AFL experience under his belt and 8 years after his debut for North Adelaide, he moved to Sturt in search of “something different”.

It was here his SANFL star truly rose, winning consecutive Magarey Medals in his first two seasons at the club and guiding Sturt to the 2002 premiership – its first since 1976. He played 7 State of Origin games for South Australia and won Sturt’s best and fairest award in 1999 and 2005. Played: Five AFL games for Port Adelaide (1997); 113 SANFL games and 145 goals for North Adelaide (1991-98) and 145 games and 157 goals for Sturt (1999-2006).

Represented: SA seven times; captain in 2003 v WA. Honours: Magarey Medal, 1999 and 2000; Sturt club champion, 1999 and 2005; Sturt premeirship player, 2002, Player Life Member Sturt FC; SANFL Player Life Member. The West End SA Football Hall of Fame is divided into five eras – 1877-1900, 1901-1930, 1931-1960, 1961-1990 and 1991-present day.

Inductees are selected by the South Australian Football Hall of Fame Selection Committee, which comprises Leigh Whicker AM, Julian Burton OAM, John Halbert AM MBE, Tim Pfeiffer, Neil Kerley AM, Chris McDermott, David Shipway AM, Michelangelo Rucci and Bill Sanders AM. Michael O’Loughlin There are few things that Michael O’Loughlin hasn’t achieved in football and he adds another string to his impressive bow with induction into the SA Football Hall of Fame. Already a member of the Australian Football Hall of Fame, Micky O played his entire 303-game AFL career with the Sydney Swans, with whom he won the 2005 premiership. A member of the Indigenous Team of the Century, he was the third Indigenous player to play 300 AFL games, a two-time All-Australian, and a winner of the Fos Williams Medal for his efforts in the 1998 State of Origin. However, he will perhaps be best remembered for his celebration after kicking the match-winning goal against the West Coast Eagles at Subiaco in the 2006 Qualifying Final – a moment forever enshrined in Jamie Cooper’s AFL-commissioned painting the Game That Made Australia. Played: 303 AFL games for Sydney, kicked 521 goals (1995-2009). Represented: SA three times, Indigenous All-Stars, once.

Honours: AFL premiership, 2005; All-Australian, 1997 and 2000; Sydney club champion, 1998; Sydney leading goalkicker, 2000 and 2001; Indigenous Team of the Century; Fos Williams Medal as best for SA, 1998; Australian Football Hall of Fame. SANFL juniors: Central District. Stuart Palmer Rarely in the headlines but often among the best players, Stuart Palmer is South Adelaide’s games record holder having pulled on the Panthers jumper 337 times over the course of his 17-year career. Born in England, he moved to Australia at the age of 5 and rose swiftly through South’s junior programs before making his debut in 1969. It was a memorable debut for the fresh-faced 17-year-old who registered a goal with his first kick in League football in front of a hostile Alberton Crowd. Proving this moment was no flash in the pan, he went on to win the award for Best First Year Player that same year. Stuart displayed great versatility throughout his career and played in various positions, including full-back in the 1979 Grand Final.

Following his retirement in 1985, he resided as South Adelaide club chairman. Played: 337 SANFL games for South Adelaide, kicked 28 goals (1969-1985). Represented: SA once. Honours: South Adelaide captain, 1982-84; Player Life Member South Adelaide FC; SANFL Player Life Member; Australian Sports Medal, 2000. Administration: South Adelaide club chairman, 1997-2001. WOODCOCK WINS 2017 MCCALLUM TOMKINS MEDAL North Adelaide midfielder Boyd Woodcock has won the 2017 McCallum Tomkins Medal for the Under-18 Torrens Uni Cup Competition.

Attracting a total of 19 votes, Woodcock finished three votes ahead of second-placed Josh Smithson from West Adelaide while the Eagles’ Kai Pudney was placed third with 15 votes. Originally from the Paskeville Bute Football Club on the Yorke Peninsula, the 17-year-old was named in his side’s best players on 11 occasions this year from his 12 Torrens Uni Cup matches. Woodcock – who also managed four appearances in the Roosters’ Reserves this year – polled four first preferences, two second preferences and three thirds in catching the umpire’s eye. Woodcock is the third North Adelaide player in the past four years to win the McCallum Tomkins Medal, with Jonathon Hayes winning in 2014 and Dakota Nixon in 2016, since the Under-18 competition’s inception in 2009. Click for the full list of votes for the 2017 McCallum Tomkins Medal 2017 McCallum Tomkins Medal Boyd Woodcock (North Adelaide) 19 votes Josh Smithson (West Adelaide) 16 votes Kai Pudney (Eagles) 15 votes Ed Allan (Sturt) 13 votes Jake Weidemann (Eagles) 12 votes Michael Ortiz (Sturt) 12 votes. Selectors have released the 40-player squad for The 2017 Advertiser SANFL Team of the Year, with Woodville-West Torrens and Sturt dominating selection. Featuring at least one representative from each SANFL club, The Advertiser SANFL Team of the Year squad will be trimmed to a placed team of 21 at a function on Tuesday September 19.

The coach of the 2017 Advertiser SANFL Team of the Year will also be named, together with the captain and vice-captain. The Eagles and Sturt – last year’s Grand Finalists – each have eight players chosen, including the 2016 Team of the Year captain Zane Kirkwood and his deputy Luke Thompson. Double Blues Sam Colquhoun and Pat Wilson are new faces, with Colquhoun enjoying a strong year since arriving from the Power and Wilson posting a breakout season in the midfield after missing last year’s premiership with a shoulder injury. Eagles recruit Jake Johansen has found plenty of the ball since crossing over from Glenelg while Joe Sinor has been a revelation across half-back for the Eagles. Elimination Finalists Norwood and Central District each have five representatives, Bulldogs ball magnets Travis Schiller and Nick Holman have had sensational seasons while Redlegs Mitch Grigg and Matt Panos will be strong candidates to start in the midfield. Four Port Adelaide players are present with Ken Farmer Medallist Brett Eddy almost certain to lock in the full forward position while big-bodied midfielder Brendon Ah Chee has produced an influential season in the centre square.

Glenelg and South Adelaide each have three players, with APY Lands product Dom Barry catching the eye with his run and carry from the wing for the Bays while Matt Rose has been arguably the Panthers’ most consistent player in 2017. Adelaide veteran Scott Thompson and Harrison Wigg have been integral cogs in the Crows’ midfield in the Macca’s League, with the latter averaging in excess of 25 disposals. Cellar-dwellars West Adelaide and North Adelaide each have one player chosen, with Kaine Stevens and Lewis Hender both deserving of consideration in the final 21. Players were selected on their form across the entire minor round, with AFL-listed players eligible for Macca’s League finals also considered eligible for the Advertiser SANFL Team of the Year. This year’s team will be selected by SANFL’s Adam Kelly, Tom Hurley and Zac Milbank, Channel 7’s Mark Soderstrom and The Advertiser’s Chief SANFL Writer, Warren Partland. 2017 Barrie Robran Club Champion Presentation Night Join us at the North Adelaide Football Clubs night of nights, as we count the votes round by round, to decide this year’s Barrie Robran Club Champion.

George Thring announces his retirement George Thring has advised the club that he will finish his SANFL career at the end of the 2017 season. George, who joined the Roosters in 2009 from Sturt, has given great service over his 9 years with the club.

On field, George provided great energy, composure, versatility and exceptional foot skills, playing mainly on a wing and across half back. Off field, George is a well-respected member of the playing list, highlighted by his addition to the 6 man leadership group this season. George will represent the Roosters in the reserves upcoming finals campaign where he will provide valuable experience to the young group. Hopefully the players can emulate last season’s result and send George out on a winning note. From everyone at the North Adelaide Football Club, we would like to thank George for his contribution and commitment to the Roosters and we wish him & his partner Georgie all the very best for their future.

SA STATE COMBINE INVITEES Mature-agers and father-sons feature in the 21 South Australians to test at the AFL State Combine to be held at Prince Alfred College on Saturday October 14. Glenelg’s Dom Barry and Sturt’s Pat Wilson, together with developing ruckmen Jordon Sweet (North) and Jordan West (Eagles) have attracted the interest of AFL scouts ahead of the AFL National and Rookie Drafts. Speaking on SANFL Radio, SANFL Talent Manager Brenton Phillips said the quartet’s selection proved the Macca’s League can provide a perfect platform for players initially overlooked at elite level. Barry, from the APY Lands, has been consistently using the ball well off a wing for the Bays while Wilson has blossomed as a big-bodied midfielder for the Double Blues after missing last year’s Macca’s League premiership due to a shoulder injury.

Sweet and West – the nephew of former Norwood and Glenelg key forward Jim West – have made the most of their recent opportunities due to the injuries to first-choice ruckmen at their clubs in James Craig (North) and Marc Borholm (Eagles). Jackson Edwards, who made his Macca’s League debut for Glenelg in Round 15, and Eagle Jake Weidemann have also received interest, with both of their fathers – Tyson Edwards and Wayne Weidemann – playing at the highest level for Adelaide FC. Another to make his presence felt at senior level this year has been Sturt’s Mitch Crowden, who has played the most Macca’s League matches this year (nine) of any McDonald’s SA Under-18 players. Little known Oscar Chapman (North) and Curtis McCarthy (Glenelg) have also found themselves on the list, with the latter the younger brother of Geelong forward Lincoln McCarthy.

KEN FARMER STATUE UNVEILING North Adelaide champion Ken Farmer will be immortalised in bronze, with his sculpture to be unveiled outside of Adelaide Oval’s northern entrance on Friday evening. The late Roosters spearhead has been carefully crafted by talented artist Ken Martin, who also completed the Barrie Robran sculpture, which sits proudly outside of the southern entrance to the home of SA football. Speaking on SANFL Radio, Martin said the entire process to create the sculpture took nine months, with attention to detail an important factor in the design.

Martin revealed he studied many photographs in order to capture Farmer’s mannerisms as well as reading historical documents to gain an insight into his character. Farmer’s sculpture is the fourth and final one to be revealed at the Adelaide Oval with the others capturing the movements of fellow North Adelaide great Robran, four-time Magarey Medallist Russell Ebert and Australian Football Hall of Fame Legend Malcolm Blight. Generously donated by benefactor Basil Sellers AM, the Ken Farmer Statue will be revealed to the public at a ceremony commencing at 4:30pm. KEN FARMER STATUE UNVEILING - Friday 18 August, 2017 - 4:30pm Adj.

AFTER THE GAME Presentations: There will be no meals after the match this week. However, we encourage all supporters to join us for a drink in the Function Room Bar and vote for the Supporters MVP award. Senior Players and Coaching Staff will be in attendance from 6pm for Presentations. Dear Members and Supporters, As mentioned in our initial announcement, in early 2018 we will be installing a new picket fence around the oval, and each picket will honour a player who has played League football for the Roosters since 1897, via a special plaque.

Players we have on record as playing between 1888 and 1896 will also be honoured with a picket dedicated to each season (but will not be included in the donation process). From 1897 each picket will include a plaque with a player’s name, beginning at number 1, and will move around the oval in chronological order to the current players of today, and then those of the future to be added.

The plaques will be attached to the top of each picket depicting the players chronological number, name and debut season. Every supporter will then have the opportunity to donate to a picket, choosing a player of their choice (if available at the time of order), with the name of the donor/s added to a plaque underneath the NAFC players name. We can only accept one donation per picket which can be a single name, family name or a group name. We are now pleased to announce that the acceptance of donations for the Prospect Oval general oval pickets will commence on Monday 14 August from 10.00am. The auctioning process of the Magarey Medallists and Inaugural Hall of Famers pickets will be done through a link on our NAFC website (to Galabid’s formal auctioning website).

The auction website will be open and available for viewing from Thursday 10 August from 9.00am, however, the bidding process will commence on Monday 14 August at 10.00am and finish on Friday 25 August at 4.00pm. This enables you to set up an account with Galabid and get ready for the auction.

A full list of every NAFC player since 1897 in chronological order will be available on our website from Thursday 10 August, and this list will also be available at reception during office hours from then. The general picket donations can be ordered and paid for (in full) from Monday 14 August from 10.00am via one of three (3) ways: • By telephoning reception (we will complete a form and accept payment over the phone) • By coming into reception during office hours (Mon – Fri) (a form to be completed by the donor at reception) • By downloading a form on line and returning it via email or in person (note: must have payment details fully completed on the form for acceptance). The donation will be set at $200 per picket for non NAFC members, or $180 for an NAFC member.

A very small donation for a piece of significant history! Please understand each picket can only receive one donation, so if your desired player picket already has a donor, we will advise you immediately so you can select another. To secure your donation, payment must be made immediately in full, we cannot ‘hold’ any pickets without receiving payment. Donors will need to be really clear in how they would like to present their name on the plaque, so we ask that you provide clear and concise details to ensure we fully understand what you want. We look forward to commencing this exciting project and hope you get a slice of Rooster history! Dear Members and Supporters of the North Adelaide Football Club, Just a quick note to advise you that, further to my note to you all on the 21 st July 2017 advising of the review of our Football Department, the Board has agreed to engage International Sports Care (ISC) to undertake the review. The Review will be led by ISC Directors Brian Cunningham and Tim Ridgway who will equally share the role. Many of you would know Brian who has had extensive experience as a player at SANFL league level and as a Chief Executive in both the Private and Public Sectors including at the Port Adelaide Football Club and at two large SA Government Departments. Tim has expertise in the provision of high level consultancy and organisational development services as well as group and individual coaching, leadership development and player welfare programs for athletes and coaches at all levels.

He has recently conducted these programs for a number of AFL clubs, including Collingwood, Port Adelaide, Brisbane and Richmond. He also has expertise in career and vocational guidance and organisational and sports psychology. The review will commence Monday 7 th August 2017 and be completed by 22 nd September 2017. As I said to you previously, this an exciting and positive move for our Club and we look forward to the outcomes and to maximising the performance of our club in the future. The other four finals-shaping matches will kick off at 2.10pm to give each team leading into the major round an even recovery period. On behalf of the NAFC Board, staff, members and supporters, we congratulate Shane Edwards on playing his 200 th AFL match for Richmond tomorrow. Our Board has prepared and sent a letter to Shane which highlights how proud the club is of this great achievement, and how he has represented the club, his family and his culture with outstanding distinction.

Shane is the first indigenous player to play 200 matches at Richmond and the 27 th Richmond player in history to reach this milestone. Shane, who played his junior football at the Golden Grove Football Club, was drafted in 2006 to Richmond at pick 26, and debuted against the Western Bulldogs round 4, 2007 at the MCG. He is only the fifth NAFC player to play 200 AFL matches, joining Wayne Carey, Sean Wellman, Darren Jarman and Ben Hart, and it is only Shane and Ben who played League for North and played 200 AFL matches for the one club. A superb achievement, and we will all continue to watch Shane’s career and make sure he knows his home club, the North Adelaide Football Club, is always behind him. Regards, Lee Virgin President NAFC.

Dear valued Members and Supporters, In an increasingly challenging environment, our Club strives to ensure we position ourselves as the leading SANFL club, on and off the field. Whilst we develop strategies and actions to achieve the successful outcomes we all want, our core business goal (winning SANFL premierships) requires best practice modelling and philosophies to ensure we are positioned to achieve that goal.

As we know, we haven’t achieved Premiership success since 1991 despite some strong seasons since then. With this objective foremost in our minds your Board and Management is pleased to inform you that it has agreed to a recommendation to the Board from our Football Executive to undertake an external independent in-season review (the Review) of the Football Department and related activities of the North Adelaide Football Club. The Review is planned to commence in the next three to four weeks and to be completed by mid-September 2017 and the Reviewer will be overseen by the Football Executive. It is also a priority of the Board that the Review has minimal disruption and impact on our playing group, and we will ensure everything is done to enable us to focus on winning football games for our club for the remainder of the season. This an exciting and positive move for our Club that is supported by our management and staff. We look forward to the outcomes and to maximising the performance of our club in the future. Regards, Lee Virgin President – NAFC Board of Directors.

Dear Members and Supporters, The Board of the NAFC has approved a new project which is designed to permanently honour the past, present and future players of our great Club, as well as offer the opportunity for everyone to have a piece of Prospect Oval history.

In early 2018, we will be installing a new picket fence around the oval, and each picket will honour a player who has played League football for the Roosters since 1897, via a special plaque. Players we have on record as playing between 1888 and 1896 will also be honoured with a picket dedicated to each season. From 1897 each picket will include a plaque with a player’s name, beginning at number 1, and will move around the oval in chronological order to the current players of today, and then those of the future to be added. The plaques will be attached to the top of each picket depicting the players chronological number, name and debut season. Every supporter will then have the opportunity to donate a picket, choosing a player of their choice (if available at the time of order), with the name of the donor/s added to a plaque underneath the NAFC players plaque. We can only accept one donation per picket which can be a single name, family name or a group name.

The donation will be set at $200 per picket for non NAFC members, or $180 for an NAFC member. A very small donation for a piece of significant history! In addition, there will be special pickets available which will honour our Magarey Medallists and Hall of Famers, which will have an additional plaque detailing their achievements. These will only be available via an on line auction (via Galabid) to give everyone the opportunity to donate a picket for some of the most celebrated players in the Clubs history. Once we have finalised the list of NAFC players in chronological order, we will make the list available on our website with hard copies also available in the admin office. The timing and instructions for the auction for the Magarey Medallists and Hall of Famers will be confirmed at that time. Whilst this exciting project will enhance the aesthetics of the oval and overall surroundings, what a great chance to honour all players of the Club, and give our supporters the opportunity to have their own piece of Prospect Oval history!

Our next communication on this project will detail the commencement date, how to make your picket donation and outline the details of the on line auction process. We are hoping to receive donations for all pickets as all players who have played for the club have played important roles in our history, so be ready to grab your chance to secure a past Rooster and a bit of life long recognition for yourself as a loyal supporter and member! Please understand, if your desired player picket already has a donor, we will advise you immediately so you can select another. To secure your donation, payment must be made immediately, we cannot ‘hold’ any pickets without receiving the donation. We look forward to launching this exciting project soon! NAFC SANFL SCHOOL HOLIDAY CLINICS On Monday July 10 th and Tuesday July 11 th the North Adelaide FC ran our yearly Footy School Holiday Clinics. Clinics are completely run by NAFC League players.

This year we had 6 of our Senior Male League player including Captain Mitch Clisby. We were also fortunate enough to have 3 of our Senior Female League players, including our Women’s team Captain Jess Edwards.

The two days consisted of the kids mixing in the players and creating a close relationship with them; the kids learnt new skills and played a mixture of fun games. It was a very successful two days with some great positive feedback coming from parents and kids. As part of the clinic all children get a NAFC training polo (as you can see in the photo) and a junior membership. We would like to thank all kids for coming out and their parents for braving the cold and brining them along! We also thank our players for their efforts in running the clinics for the kids.

Speaking on SANFL Radio, North Football Manager Darryl Wintle said the club was pleased with the performance of first-gamers Brayden Kirk and Noa Corbett, who had an impact on the wing and in attack respectively. Former Carlton utility Joe Anderson, Sam De Leonardis and Maris Olekalns also contributed strongly while playing their first Macca’s League matches of the year. North will now turn its attention to a tough contest against Sturt at Peter Motley Oval in Round 12 of the Macca’s League on Saturday afternoon, with star midfielder Jordie McKenzie hoping to overcome a minor groin complaint.

Zac Milbank CHIEF SANFL WRITER. North v South – 100 Games at Prospect Since 1922 when North Adelaide first made Prospect Oval their home ground there has been 740 games played with 424 wins, seven draws and 309 losses. And a significant milestone will occur this weekend when South will become the first opposition team to play 100 games against North at our beloved home ground. Ironically of the seven opposition teams in 1922 South were the last to venture to Prospect Oval that season when they made their way down Main North Road for the Round 13 clash (the penultimate minor round). On that occasion North (sitting 7 th) defeated finals-bound South 10.9 to 6.15 with Percy Lewis kicking five goals and Billy Thomas, Leslie Burt, Percy Furler and Ray Ween featuring in the best players.

Advance to Round 11, 2017 and North and South will clash for the 100 th time. A statistical breakdown of their 99 clashes at Prospect but some notable points include: • North’s highest score (26.11-167) was only 4 seasons ago in 2013 when Lewis Johnston kicked 7 and Cohen Thiele, Nick Amato and Jay Shannon were given Magarey Medal votes; • South’s Highest score (kicked in 2003) would prove the nail in Darel Hart’s coaching career as he was let go after the result; • The biggest crowd was 11,926 in Round 20, 1965. North lost 15.10 to 11.11 with Ken “KG” Cunningham umpiring.

The match was remembered for a massive hailstorm 45 minutes before the match commenced.; • On three occasions North have won 12 successive matches against South at Prospect; • North’s 23.19 (157) kicked against South in 1933 was – at that time – North’s highest score in any match; • Whilst North have kicked 10 goals or more in a quarter 3 times South have never achieved this feat against North at Prospect; • Whilst Ken Famer’s highest individual goalkicking record at Prospect is 23 goals against Torrrens his next 4 highest efforts were all against South: 16.10, 16.2, 15 and 14.2. In regards to the great Ken Farmer his record against South at Prospect is simple incredible. In the 16 occasions he kicked 147 goals at an average of 9.19 including 8 times he kicked 10 goals or more.

In simplest form, his breakdown was as such: 4, 15, 10, 7, 16, 11, 16, 4, 7, 11, 14, 5, 2, 11, 7, 7. NAFC History Committee Positions available Are you interested in the history of our great Club? Perhaps you have even considered joining the NAFC History Committee? - now is your chance.

Members would be well aware of the fabulous work of this Committee over a long period of time. While the Committee has been responsible for many notable public achievements, much of its work relates to “behind the scenes” activities that underpin these public celebrations: research, cataloguing, preservation etc. Due to some recent retirements, there are now opportunities to join the Committee.

We would love to have more IT expertise and research experience, but just a willingness to assist would be appreciated. It doesn’t need to be a huge time commitment – all we ask for is enthusiasm! If you think you might be interested in assisting the Committee (and in turn our Club), please contact the Committee Chairman, Barry Dolman, on 0431 810 185. JAY SHANNON After much discussion with the Club over recent weeks, we can announce that Jay Shannon will move on from the Club and play the rest of the season with a community football club. After discussing his role with the senior coach over the past couple of weeks, Jay understands the direction the club wants to go and therefore feels it is the right time for him to depart and make way for younger players to come in.

As usual, Jay’s respect for the Clubs needs came first, and he will be sorely missed from the playing group on and off the field. Jay has been of outstanding character since he arrived at the Club in 2012, and his attitude over the past couple of years when under some selection and injury pressure has been exceptional. After being starved of opportunities at Port Adelaide, Jay moved across to the Roosters in 2012 and had an immediate impact on our teams performance and culture.

He played a key role in our finals appearances in 2012 and 2013 and won our Barrie Robran Club Champion League Best and Fairest in 2014, representing our club in the State Team that season. In 2016, after battling with some injury problems, he won the Reserves Best and Fairest and was awarded the best player in the Reserves Grand Final. We would like to sincerely thank Jay for his wonderful contribution and dedication to our Club since his arrival and wish him and his partner Vanessa the very best in their future endeavours. MCDONALD’S SA U18 TEAM – GAME 2 McDonald’s SA U18 coach Brenton Phillips has made four changes in preparation for the clash against the Allies at Adelaide Oval on Saturday morning.

Set to play their only home game for the AFL U18 National Championships, the Croweaters have boosted their pace with the inclusion of Glenelg’s Liam Denton while North Adelaide forward Bryce Denham has also been listed at full forward. Denham, who measures in at 194cm and 89kg, can also be thrown into the ruck to assist McDonald’s SA U18 captain Callum Coleman-Jones while Sturt’s Brandon Zerk-Thatcher is another inclusion to assist at the stoppages. Rooster Hugo Barry (190cm and 81kg) has also been listed on the interchange bench, offering size and flexibility to the line-up. Speaking on SANFL Radio, Phillips said it was a tough call to leave out Norwood’s Lachlan Pascoe and Mitchell Coles, West’s Jakob Heitmann and Glenelg’s Ruben Flinn, who will play for the McDonald’s SA U17 Futures team on Friday night. Phillips also chats about SA’s heart-breaking one-point loss to WA last Saturday, in which the Sandgropers won on the Golden Point rule once the final siren had sounded with scores locked on 10.13 (73). Entry is free to the McDonald’s SA U18 clash v the Allies, with the rivals made up of the best players from Tasmania, NSW/ACT, Queensland and the Northern Territory.

After the contest, the SA side will undertake a well-earned recovery session at the Next Generation Gym. SANFL SMOKE FREE POLICY MEMBER & SUPPORTER SURVEY SANFL is seeking feedback from SANFL Club Members and Supporters to help us create a consistent and fair smoke-free policy across all SANFL venues. Currently SANFL match day venues have differing smoke-free policies, which may be confusing for patrons when visiting other grounds. NINE-A-SIDE CARNIVALS IN FULL SWING SANFL is currently conducting a series of school-based nine-a-side carnivals around the metropolitan area in conjunction with the Adelaide Football Club. As many as 370 children participated in North Adelaide FC’s competition which was held last Friday with the Crows and Norwood FC at the Adelaide Aquatic Centre Parklands in North Adelaide. The Next Generation Academy Cup was held for the boys, which included 11 teams from the Roosters’ metropolitan zone.

A total of nine girls teams from the Redlegs’ zone and 11 sides from the North zone competed for the Crows Cup. This amounted to a tally of 31 teams competing across 15 ovals, with Blackfriars Priory students helping out by umpiring throughout the day. The winners of each nine-a-side carnival will progress to a play off against those in other SANFL zones, with the Crows Cup finalists to play a curtain-raiser for the Adelaide v Hawthorn AFL clash at Adelaide Oval next Thursday. ”It was a fantastic day, great to see so many boys and girls having fun and getting active,” North Adelaide Development Officer Jason Rivett said. ”We thank the Adelaide Football Club for their support in the lead up to the event and on the day itself.”.

TOM SCHWARZ 50 GAMES Tom reaches his 50 th game this weekend against Glenelg on the holiday Monday. After 27 games and 7 goals for the Eagles Schwarz came to Prospect last season and has not looked back since. In his debut season at North he finished 3 rd in the Club Champion award – a great effort considering his debut wasn’t until Round 6 (ironically against Glenelg) due to his arrival at North after the season had commenced. A tough competitor, Schwarz ability to find the ball is balanced by his methodical defensive side, in particular his tackling. He has already clocked up four occasions where he has been recorded with 10 or more tackles including an amazing 16 against Glenelg in Round 11 last season. May the red-and-whites see Tom continue to play great footy for many more seasons.
